SUMMARY:Folk at Nortons: Barry Kerr - Curlews Cry Tour 2026
DESCRIPTION:Barry Kerr is riding a remarkable new wave of recognition\, with his seventh studio album Curlew’s Cry shortlisted for Folk Album of the Year. March will see him on a special run of English dates: Stroud’s Prince Albert on 16 March\, a featured appearance at the Awards show in Manchester on 17 March (to be streamed online)\, Birmingham’s Nortons on 18 March\, and the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith\, London\, on 19 March. \nA celebrated composer\, singer-songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, and visual artist\, Barry is known for work that captures the raw pulse and quiet poetry of Irish life. Originally from the southern shores of Lough Neagh and now rooted in the wild landscape of Connemara\, he has carved out a distinctive voice over more than two decades of touring and recording-sharing stages with some of Ireland’s most revered performers. \nBarry recorded his debut album at just seventeen\, launching an international career that has seen him collaborate with luminaries such as Steve Cooney\, Cara Dillon\, Julie Fowlis\, Lumiere\, and Dervish. His compositions have travelled even further\, finding new life in the hands of artists including Karan Casey\, Flook\, Jiggy\, Beoga\, Brian Finnegan\, Damian O’Kane\, and Kate Rusby. \nAn award-winning musician with a reputation for artistic fearlessness\, Barry received the inaugural Liam O’Flynn Award from the National Concert Hall and the Arts Council in 2020. In 2023\, he served as Traditional Musician in Residence at University College Cork. His creative curiosity continues to push boundaries-most notably in Fuascail\, his meditative film exploring Ireland’s decade of centenaries\, broadcast on TG4 in December 2022. \nAt the heart of Barry’s recent work lies Curlew’s Cry: a haunting\, luminous collection of original and traditional songs inspired by folklore\, memory\, and the natural world. Its shortlist for Folk Album of the Year marks a powerful moment in the evolution of an artist whose voice is as timeless as it is unmistakably his own. \n⭐⭐⭐⭐”Pipes and flute dip and soar with avian elegance” – The Irish Times ‘Like Gaughan and Moore\, but with his own thing going on\, I love this guy’. Mike Harding “Stopped me in my tracks. Could not stop listening. Stunning.” – Imelda May “An exceptional\, original\, artistic and enduring masterpiece.” – Irish Music Magazine

SUMMARY:Power Folk returns to Nortons! Sun 7 June
DESCRIPTION:The Folk Ensemble’s annual hometown party is back in Digbeth for its 13th year\, and it’s one of those days where you just settle in early and don’t make other plans. \nFrom 2pm through to late\, we’ve got a full run of bands\, big sounds\, and the kind of energy that builds all day and doesn’t really let you go. \nKicking things off\, the University of Birmingham Folk Band get us underway – one of the most exciting young groups in the city\, led by Paloma Trigás (Urban Folk Quartet\, Carlos Núñez and plenty more). If you like your folk sharp\, lively and properly played\, you’re in good hands. \nThen straight into GOOD HABITS bringing uplifting indie folk fusion – the sort that gets people smiling early doors. BBC 6 Music and Songlines already backing them\, so we’re not the only ones paying attention. \nUrban Folk Quartet follow with serious intent. High energy\, cross-genre\, and ridiculously tight. One of those bands where you look up halfway through and realise the whole room’s locked in. \nPotts and Jammin turn things up a notch after that – soulful\, rootsy rock with a bit more weight behind it. If you’ve seen Potts before\, this is him louder\, fuller\, and not holding back. \nThen it’s Blackbeard’s Tea Party – swagger\, sea shanties\, folk turned sideways into something bigger and a bit chaotic in the best way. \nAnd then the main event.Joe Broughton’s Conservatoire Folk Ensemble. \n80 musicians. No exaggeration. No easing into it.This is their hometown set\, once a year\, full force. It’s the reason Power Folk exists and it does exactly what it says on the tin. \nFrom there\, we’re not letting it drift off quietly. \nSelectah Si Chai takes over into the night – a proper dig through global sounds\, built for dancing\, built for people who aren’t quite ready to call it. \nAlongside it all\, we’ve got The Woodman Session running in the next room – open\, welcoming\, bring your instrument if you fancy it. No pressure\, just people getting involved. \nAnd in between everything\, Tom Chapman keeping things ticking over with a steady run of danceable bits so it never drops.
